Instagram Food Hashtags: Your Guide to Getting Noticed

Want to boost your following, get noticed, and maybe even become insta-famous? If so, food hashtags can help you meet your goals. Whether you’re a blogger, a chef, or a foodie in search of like-minded thinkers, you’re going to love what these Instagram food hashtags can do for you.

Before You Get Started….

Hey! I know you’re eager to learn more about the best food hashtags. First let’s take a quick look at some do’s and don’ts. You can use these hashtag guidelines all over the place – they’re great for more than food.

Instagram Hashtag Do’s & Don’ts:

Do:

Use niche hashtags such as foodie hashtags along with generic hashtags. Mixing it up helps you get noticed.

Use relevant hashtags! If your hashtags aren’t on point in describing your post, you’re wasting your time. Instagram users can (and do!) report irrelevant hashtags, which can result in penalties for you and your account.

Look to see what others are doing! Hashtag trends change all the time. While tried and true hashtags come with obvious advantages, it’s always helpful to look for ways to hop on board and use trending hashtags as long as they’re relevant. Keep in mind, if a hashtag is one that only one competitor is using, you might harm yourself by using it too.

Tag your location! Believe it or not, this can increase engagement by leaps and bounds. In some cases, a combination of tagged location and good hashtags boost Instagram engagement by as much as 75 percent or even more.

Don’t:

Be a minimalist. Instagram experts used to recommend using three to five hashtags. Now we know that posts with more hashtags tend to get better engagement, so consider using 10 to 15 hashtags for every post. You can (and should) use some of your favorite hashtags consistently so long as they’re on point. If you can find 30 relevant hashtags for your post, go ahead and use them!

Accidentally misspell your hashtags. Double-check if you’re not sure about spelling, since misspelled words mean lost posts that don’t attract the right kind of attention.

Use only the most popular Instagram hashtags unless you’re a top influencer with a large following. If a tag has more than about 1 million associated posts (#coffee is a good example) then you’re basically burying your posts by using only the most popular ones. Use good (but less popular) Instagram hashtags so that your posts stay visible longer when people view that tag. Tags between 5,000 and 500,000 posts are often excellent choices. You can and should still use the most popular hashtags – just remember to mix things up.

Be afraid to create your own hashtag! If you do, make sure it’s memorable, catchy, and to the point. Using too many words makes for confusion. Remember “short and sweet” and you’ll be on the right track.

More Advice for Using Food Instagram Hashtags

Now that you know which food hashtags Instagram users flock to, be sure to use them to your advantage and make posts that will appeal from every angle. Here are a few more tips for getting the most from every Instagram food post you create:

1. Use a minimum of four hashtags per post. More is better, but it’s fine to be selective.

2. If you put your hashtags in your description, try creating a new line with three dots, and then creating another line that contains your foodie hashtags. If you like, you can put them in your first comment instead. This is a pro secret that many newer users aren’t aware of, and it can go a long way toward keeping your description looking clean. At the same time, this might not be the best strategy if you want your users to visually notice your hashtags.

3. Create a list of your favorite / best hashtags and save it in your phone’s notes so that you can just copy and paste instead of retyping your most commonly used food hashtags over and over again. Over time, you might want to come up with a menu of different lists that you can use for different things. This is going to save you tons of time and make Instagram even more fun to use. Do remember to add a few “specific” hashtags alongside your lists so that all of your posts have something unique to offer.
